Opening Note from BGMJ²

Welcome back to Behind the Tiles: This Week at the Table — your weekly pull-up for everything happening in and around the BGMJ² community.

Each week, we’ll bring you a curated look at what’s moving across our Mahjong lifestyle world: upcoming events, travel notes, community highlights, table tips, hosting inspiration, and those little moments that remind us why Mahjong is more than a game.

This week, the table is moving in more than one direction — from Atlanta to Charlotte to Hong Kong. We’re talking sold-out Mahjong travel, Queen City energy, and the growing ways BGMJ² is creating space for connection, leisure, culture, and play.

So settle in, pull your chair close, and let’s get into what’s happening behind the tiles

Featured Tile: Black Girls (and a guy) Mahjong in Hong Kong —- The Journey is Set

Some trips are vacations.

Some trips are experiences.

  1. And then there are journeys that become part of the story.

This October, Black Girls Mahjong, Too! is heading to Hong Kong for a curated Mahjong, culture, leisure, and legacy experience from October 1–8, 2026, with a two-day Macau extension from October 8–10, 2026.

And this one is officially set.

    The itinerary is complete.
    The seats are claimed.
    The journey is sold out.

This experience was created for travelers who wanted more than a standard vacation. It was designed for those who wanted to see Mahjong through the lens of culture, connection, beauty, and place.

Hong Kong gives us all of that.

    The skyline.
    The harbor.
    The food.
    The markets.
    The history.
    The movement of the city.
    The cultural heartbeat of Mahjong.

For BGMJ², this journey represents what happens when Mahjong moves beyond the table and becomes a lifestyle.

It says our community belongs at tables across the world.
It says leisure can be intentional.
It says Mahjong can be cultural, social, stylish, and rooted in connection.
It says the game can take us places — literally.

Our time in Hong Kong will be followed by a two-day extension in Macau, giving travelers another layer of culture, dining, architecture, and discovery before the journey comes to a close.

At this time, the Hong Kong experience is sold out. But if you missed this one, stay close.

    This is only the beginning.

The next curated Mahjong travel experience is already somewhere on the horizon — and when the next seat opens, you’ll want to be first in line.

Around the Table: What’s Coming Up

There is always something happening around the BGMJ² table, and this is where we’ll keep you connected to what’s next.

Whether you are looking for local open play, a regional pop-up, a guided learning experience, or a travel-inspired Mahjong gathering, this section is your weekly check-in.

Queen City Charlotte Pop-Up

Charlotte, it’s almost your turn.

Black Girls Mahjong, Too! is coming to the Queen City on Saturday, June 6, 2026, and we are bringing American Mahjong, guided play, community, laughter, and that signature BGMJ² table energy with us.

This pop-up is designed for both newer and experienced players. Whether you are still learning the rhythm of the game or already comfortable with your card in hand, this will be a welcoming space to play, connect, and experience Mahjong in community.

Expect guided play support, social play, light bites, beverages, giveaways, and a room full of good table energy.

Experienced players are encouraged to bring their 2026 National Mah Jongg League card, as loaner cards may be limited.

Charlotte, go ahead and clear the calendar. The table is coming your way.

Tuesday Social Play — Corner Tavern, Hapeville

Our Tuesday night table is growing in Hapeville.

Join us at Corner Tavern, Hapeville for free American Mahjong social play, food, drinks, and community connection.

Bring your 2025 or 2026 NMJL card, grab something from the menu, and settle in for a casual night of tiles, laughs, and table talk.

This is a great option for players who want to get more comfortable sitting at the table without the pressure of a formal lesson or tournament.

Thursday Night Social Play — Chicago Pizza & Grille, Smyrna

Thursday nights continue to be one of our favorite community anchors.

At Chicago Pizza & Grille in Smyrna, we gather for American and Hong Kong Mahjong, good food, and good people.

This is where beginners become regulars, regulars become table friends, and table friends become community.

Whether you are coming to play, observe, learn the vibe, or simply enjoy being in the room, Thursday nights are part of the heartbeat of BGMJ².

Travel & Leisure Watch

Around here, Mahjong does not stay in one place.

It moves from restaurants to rooftops, from parks to pop-ups, from cruise decks to international cities.

Our Travel & Leisure Watch is where we’ll keep you updated on the experiences that bring Mahjong into new settings — the kind of gatherings that feel like more than an event and more like a memory in motion.

Hong Kong may be sold out, but it is also setting the tone for what is possible.

BGMJ² travel is about more than putting a Mahjong table in a pretty location. It is about designing experiences where the game becomes the bridge: to culture, to friendship, to rest, to exploration, to style, to joy.

This is where you’ll hear about upcoming Mahjong getaways, destination weekends, cruise experiences, regional pop-ups, cultural outings, and leisure moments curated for people who want their Mahjong with a little extra atmosphere.

Think:

Mahjong with a view.
Mahjong with a passport.
Mahjong with good food and better company.
Mahjong as a reason to gather beautifully.

Upcoming travel and leisure conversations to keep on your radar include:

Mahjong at Sea
A cruise experience where the tiles meet ocean air, soft luxury, and community at sea.

NOLA: Tiles, Trumpets & Table Talk
A New Orleans-inspired Mahjong weekend built around culture, music, food, and that unmistakable Crescent City rhythm.

Meet Me at the Inkwell
A coastal journey rooted in leisure, legacy, and beautiful Black travel history.

Future BGMJ² Destination Experiences
Because Hong Kong is sold out, but the travel table is just getting started.

Community Corner

This week, our Community Corner belongs to Shelley, her husband Elgin, Dawn, and the beautiful Southwest Atlanta energy that showed up around the table.

We want to give a heartfelt thank-you to Shelley and her husband, Elgin, for graciously hosting our Blooms Over the Big Card Luncheon. From the food to the fellowship to the table energy, it was exactly the kind of gathering that reminds us why BGMJ² is about so much more than Mahjong.

It was leisure.
It was laughter.
It was community.
It was grown-folk joy around the tiles.

And can we talk about the men for a moment?

The men came out in force — not just to watch, but to learn, play, ask questions, enjoy the game, and be fully part of the experience. We love seeing Mahjong become a shared table where everyone can pull up, settle in, and discover what makes this game so addictive, social, and fun.

There is something special about watching new players lean in, study the card, laugh through the learning curve, and realize, “Wait a minute… I think I like this.”

That is the magic.

We also want to officially celebrate Shelley and Dawn, who have graciously accepted and stepped into their roles as our Southwest ATL Ambassadors.

As BGMJ² continues to grow, our ambassadors help us do the important work of building warm, welcoming, and well-supported Mahjong spaces across the metro area. This includes helping connect players, support local gatherings, identify community-friendly venues, welcome new faces, encourage consistent play, and keep the spirit of BGMJ² alive in their area.

Shelley and Dawn are helping us move and groove on the Southwest side — and we could not be more excited to see what blooms from here.

BGMJ² is rooted in us, open to you, and growing one table, one neighborhood, and one beautiful community moment at a time.

Hosting Hacks: Tips for the Mahjong Hostess

A beautiful Mahjong gathering does not have to be complicated.

Sometimes the smallest hosting details make the biggest difference.

This week’s hosting hack: set the table before your guests arrive.

A Mahjong table feels more inviting when the essentials are already in place. Before the first guest walks in, try to have your racks, pushers if needed, dice, score sheets, pencils, NMJL cards, and any teaching materials already set.

It immediately tells your guests, “You have a seat here.”

And that is the whole point.

Also, think about your table flow. Keep snacks, drinks, napkins, and extra supplies close enough to reach, but not directly on the playing surface.

Mahjong tiles, cards, and condensation are not friends.

A small side table can save your setup.

Add a little beauty if you want to elevate the moment: a small floral arrangement, a pretty bowl for dice, coordinated napkins, soft background music, or a simple welcome sign.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is ease.

When the host feels prepared, the guests feel relaxed. And when the guests feel relaxed, the table opens up for laughter, learning, and connection.

Hostess note: If you are hosting newer players, assign seats intentionally. Pair brand-new players with patient players, and avoid putting all beginners at one table without support. A welcoming table is not just about décor — it is about energy.

Table Talk: Optimizing the Charleston — Let’s talk about the Charleston.

In American Mahjong, the Charleston can feel like a quick little tile exchange before the “real” game begins — but seasoned players know better.

The Charleston is where the game starts talking.

It is where your hand begins to reveal its direction, your options start narrowing, and your first real strategy decisions begin.

For newer players, the goal is not to force a hand too early. The goal is to pay attention to what your tiles are trying to tell you.

Before you pass, pause and look at what you already have:

Do you have pairs?
Do you have flowers?
Do you have jokers?
Do you have several tiles in the same suit?
Do you have numbers that appear across multiple possible hands?

The Charleston is not just about getting rid of “bad” tiles. It is about protecting the tiles that may become useful later.

For the 2026 NMJL card, flowers, fives, and sixes are especially worth watching. The sixes appear across several areas of the card, making them flexible tiles that can help you pivot as your hand develops. Fives and flowers also show up heavily, which means you may want to think twice before passing them too quickly.

That does not mean every flower, five, or six should be held forever.

It means they deserve a second look.

A good Charleston strategy asks:

What am I building toward?
What tiles give me flexibility?
What tiles are truly not serving this hand?
What am I passing just because I feel unsure?

As you move through the first left, across, and right passes, pay attention to what comes back to you. If certain numbers or suits keep appearing, that may be information. If no one seems to want a particular tile, that may also be information.

The Charleston is part strategy, part intuition, and part listening.

So this week’s table reminder is simple:

Don’t just pass tiles. Read the room. Read your rack. And discard what does not serve the hand you are becoming.

That is your Charleston mindset.

Thought for the Week

Thought of the Week

Here’s the question we’re sitting with this week:

What does it mean when Mahjong becomes more than a game?

For some people, Mahjong is strategy.
For some, it is competition.
For some, it is memory work.
For some, it is cultural connection.
For some, it is simply a reason to get out of the house and be around good people.

For us, it is all of that and more.

Mahjong has become a third place — not home, not work, but a space where people gather, exhale, learn, laugh, and belong.

That is why we keep building tables.

Not just to play.

To connect.
To travel.
To host.
To teach.
To gather well.
To create rooms where people feel seen and welcomed.

This week, we invite you to think about what Mahjong is becoming in your own life.

Is it a hobby?
A social outlet?
A wellness practice?
A new community?
A reason to travel?
A way to slow down?
A place to belong?

Whatever it is becoming, we are glad you are here.
